Most children – almost all – grow up in an environment where they keep in contact with gadgets like mobile phones continuously. These children even start playing games at very early age. Because of these environmental modifications that technology has caused, the mindset of children towards learning is fundamentally different from the mindset of children in the previous times. The most interesting thing that is mentioned in the research is that when children play video games, the dopamine level in their brains increases and this leads to two healthy things: the first one is that dopamine is associated with creativity and innovation, therefore, its increase in the brain of children is considered a good symbol. On the other hand, the second thing has more to do with the associative memory functioning of our brain. That is to say, when we learn, we learn by the process of association. For instance, if I know few things already, and if I read something new, and if these two things have some connections, both these things will be arranged in my brain, enabling me to retain and recall information much more effectively.
Another thing that games can really help with, in the learning environment, is the motivation. If the children are motivated, they can do anything. For instance, if you ask a child that if you study for one hour I’ll let you play games for one hour later. This will give the child incentive to study; but, what if we combine the games as well as a study so that when the child will play games, he will be learning something simultaneously. That is the basic argument of those people who favor games in the educational system. However, there aren’t only games that are gaining popularity day by day, many apps are also being developed which focus more on the study aspects and less on the gameplay.
