Xiaomi is not unknown to low-cost android phone lovers. The company has introduced super quality but low budget phones for everyone. Now they have come forward with new innovative tech for charging.
It’s the Mi Air Charge Technology.
Wireless charging technology is not new to us. We have used the charging pad attached with a USB cable for years now. These works only when you put your phone/device over the charging pad. Not truly wireless. The charging pad is connected to a power port and you need to put your phone in contact with the charging pad. This means you can’t play games while you are using the wireless charging pads. It’s just a bit more convenient than the regular chargers.
Scientist Nikola Tesla is famous for demonstrating magnetic resonant coupling. He showed electricity can be transmitted through the air by creating a magnetic field between two circuits, a transmitter, and a receiver.
Unfortunately, we didn’t explore this technology for the last 100 years except for some small instruments. Recently many devices like Apple iPhone and Samsung have introduced wireless charging capability with their pad.
But, Xiaomi showed what we call true wireless power transmission. In a tweet recently they mentioned, “We’re excited to bring you the remote charging technology – Mi Air Charge Technology! Charge multiple devices simultaneously while you’re gaming, walking around, or even when something’s in the way, no strings attached. Another giant leap forward in wireless charging technology!“
If the tech Xiaomi showed is in the market, you can charge your phone or other devices without putting them idle on the pad or cradle. A device just needs to be in range to get continuously charged. While you are walking, gaming, or texting your phone will get power remotely.
As stated in their blog,”
Mi Air Charge Technology – 5W remote charging
The core technology of Xiaomi’s remote charging lies in space positioning and energy transmission. Xiaomi’s self-developed isolated charging pile has five phase interference antennas built-in, which can accurately detect the location of the smartphone. A phase control array composed of 144 antennas transmits millimeter-wide waves directly to the phone through beamforming.” Read more here.
This technology is hyped for so long and we are happy that it is finally happening. Imagine an age where you do not need to think of your mobile device for power. The true achievement will be when other companies and most of our everyday devices will able to use wireless charging including our laptops, desktops, etc.
The tech is not still in the market as many things still need to be checked. There is competition from other vendors, cost of mass production, and also health effects. What will wireless power do to our health and how it will impact the environment?
But, this is no science fiction now. We are getting this tech very soon.
